autodidact ventures into the area of jungle/dnb music with the first part in a series of two by selva massiva, a project by roger gerressen and alex jansen. on the b-side chris geschwindner takes both tracks and makes sure the ep is still suitable for dance floors with two excellent remixes.

khalab has arrived onthecorner with ‘zaire’. ‘zaire’ is the beginning of a new narrative for the artist. in this first chapter khalab creates urgent compositions with layers of sound from the past, present and future. ‘zaire’ is underpinned by an intensely pounding heart of other-worldly percussion. the collaged loops frenetically jab in syncopation breaking off when the inherent swing casts its discrete groove to summon the dance. unrelenting waves of synthlines, basslines and rhythm find harmony amongst the melodic chants and distortion.

lp theres been an air of hypnagogic mystery surrounding acid tests sublabel avenue 66 from the start. joey andersons oblique, prince-inspired incantation above the cherry moon set the tone for a label thats sound that has found beauty in the furthest recesses of the dance floor, in the murkiest decay of kick drums and rave stabs. fitting then, that the first album on the imprint comes from trux, an artist who has chosen to reveal nearly nothing about themselves. following a cult classic mini-lp for office recordings, orbiter bears out the anonymous producer as a master of liminal, conceptual dance music. orbiters ten tracks have a vaporous, shape-shifting quality, threatening to topple over into full-on kick drum bliss or vanish into ambience. opener, with it, moves from heady ambient rush to skeletal piano, while blinko and roys garage spell out a hazy memoriam for the uk continuum. forlorn pianos ring out amongst the field recordings, excitable toms and jungle bass all softened in the enveloping gauze. orbiter positions trux as an unknown auteur who puts evocative world of tone and echo into dizzying motion, content to watch from the wings. track list with it orbiter blinko roys garage third glow in my world my row odd u agoma

every tune of the 12- is deeply inspired by the origins of the mid 90s melodic jungle & d n b movement, namely by the greats of that era: peshay, source direct, ltj bukem and photek. ray & karl have worked together on a number of projects over the last year, the most recent one being a split 12- on the other planet of lyon. while ray has been connected to the lo-fi house scene and acts like baltra, dj boring and dj seinfeld, karl has been more low-key, producing music that s relaxed and organic, mainly inspired by naature and the musical movement around frits wentink and max graef. for this release they worked closely together, decided to stray off their usual paths and combined their different styles to form a well-rounded record.

label friend jules heffner is doing his debut on terrace trips. -swamp- kicks off with some jungle sounds and a deep dotted bass line. guy from downstairs (gfd, robsoul) serves a smooth remix with a rolling morphing bass line and some crisp percussion hints. on the b-side -wharf- is with his flurry synths more like a fata morgana tearing you in some wet fantasies. a remix of this one is coming from anatol who just uses some synths from the original and a simple 303 bass line which turns the track in a more minimalistic direction you better use nobite on this one.

new zealand s most prolific j-tek enthusiast dan silk aka worldwide epidemic returns to the myor camp, this time for a solo release on the diamond life sublabel. on “aroha” he finds himself exploring territory slightly removed from his usual 4x4 jungle techno habitat. extended pads, techy synth stabs, sugar coated diva vocals and spot of amen choppage courtesy of label boss coco bryce make for a top notch 7 minute atmospheric d&b junglist excursion. “enterprise” offers everything one might have come to expect from mr. silk: his signature offbeat break programming layered with a 4x4 kick drum, instantly recognizable synth melodies and a healthy dose of pads. hardcore in its most gentle form.

returning with another debut release, second circles eighth record to date comes this time from young viennese musician giuseppe leonardi. performed on an array of synthesizers and experimenting with spoken word and vocals from various local singers giuseppes tbc ep take us on a dance through the catacombs and out through the jungle floor with ritualistic rhythm and haunting song. whilst at other moments giuseppes horizontal ambient pieces leave us gazing out on the shores of a distant half-remembered planet.

just like his secrets ep of last year, this latest instalment in detbois catalogue, entitled ‘ice cold, merges elements of drum and bass, jungle, bass music, techno and more in exquisite fashion, quite simply like nobody else has done before. the 3 track ep consists of pure breakbeat pleasure, with ‘blood drops leading the charge, a classy piece that elegantly rolls and seamlessly interchanges through various phases. its without doubt some of detbois most distinguished work yet, and were delighted that its opening the metalheadz account for 2018.
